Patrick Whelan MD PhD is on the Pediatrics Faculty at the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and is an assistant clinical professor of Molecular Microbiology & Immunology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. For ten years he has been on the Academic Advisory Committee for the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at the University of Southern California, and is a former board member for National Catholic Reporter. For more than twenty years he was a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He has been active in efforts to represent the concerns of people of faith within the state and national Democratic Parties, and has written widely on the medical ethics issues that dominate the interface between religion and politics. He helped lead the national Catholics for Kerry, and was founder in 2004 and president of the Catholic Democrats. He served for three years on the DNC Faith Advisory Council for Governor Howard Dean, and spoke at the Interfaith Prayer Service that opened the Democratic National Convention in Denver in 2008. Earlier in his life he taught CCD at Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles, volunteered with the Catholic Worker communities in Los Angeles and Houston, and was co-director of Pax Christi Massachusetts (part of the national Catholic peace movement). He is a founding member of the Dominican Lay Scholars in Boston and is the author, with Douglas Kmiec and Edward Gaffney, of America Undecided: Catholic, Independent and Social Justice Perspectives on Election 2012 and in 2008 of The Catholic Case for Obama.
